India Soars High: ISRO's GSLV-F14/INSAT-3DS Mission Lifts Off Successfully!
Saturday saw the successful launch of the meteorological satellite INSAT-3DS by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from SDSC-SHAR, Sriharikota, on February 17 as part of the GSLV-F14/INSAT-3DS mission. The meteorological forecast will be benefited from this mission.
This was the 16th flight of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), which took off from the second launch pad. This was a GSLV with an indigenous cryogenic state's sixth operational flight. The 420-ton rocket, which stood 51.7 metres tall and had its own cryogenic stages, successfully launched the 2,274-kg INSAD-3DS satellite into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. At a height of 253.53 km, the mission took 1123.06 seconds to complete.
Following the launch, S Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, stated, "I am delighted to declare the successful completion of the GSLV-F14/INSAT-3DS mission. The spacecraft has been put into an excellent orbit. In spite of remarking that the vehicle has worked exceptionally well, the injection circumstances were as anticipated. The current INSAT series, which consists of INSAT 3D and INSAT 3DR weather satellites in orbit, is not as capable as the next generation INSAT-3DS weather satellite"
From the Mission Control room, he stated, "INSAT-3DS will enhance the capability of observation of various atmospheric parameters like weather-related information."

With one launch every month, ISRO's 2024 schedule is jam-packed.
According to an ISRO press statement, the Ministry of Earth Sciences is providing all funding for the present mission.
The meteorological satellite INSAT-3DS was launched into the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) by the GSLV on its sixteenth mission. Later orbit-raising procedures will guarantee that the satellite is in a geostationary orbit.
The main goals of the mission are to monitor the surface of the Earth, conduct oceanic observations and study its environment in various spectral channels of meteorological significance, provide the vertical profile of different atmospheric meteorological parameters, enable data collection and dissemination from the Data Collection Platforms, and offer satellite-assisted search and rescue services, according to the release.
Insat-3DS satellite is a follow-on mission of a third generation meteorological satellite from geostationary orbit. The satellite will augment the meteorological services along with the presently operational Insat-3D and Insat-3DR in-orbit satellites.
The GSLV launcher has been termed the “naughty boy” for its spotty record.
The message from ISRO after Saturday’s successful weather satellite launch was this: The “naughty boy” has been tamed. The back-to-back successes of the GSLV vehicle — after the setback in August 2021 — has come as a boost for the space agency ahead of the launch of earth observation satellite NISAR.
